A

Account Number

A unique number that tells the bank who owns the account and whether the account is a checking or savings account.

Balance

The amount of money left in your account after debit and credit transactions.

Bank Statement

A record the bank sends you that shows all of your transactions for a month.

Bill

A piece of paper or an electronic message that shows how much money a person or company owes. For example, “The electricity company just sent me a bill that says I owe them $20.00. I need to write them a check to pay this bill.”

Blank endorsement

A type of endorsement made when the back of a check is signed without any added restrictions.

Bounced Check

A check written for an amount that is greater than the balance of your account.

Cash

Bills and coins, money. Also called currency.

Check

A signed legal document that instructs a bank to pay out money to a person or business.

Check Number

The unique identifying number in the top right corner of the check that tells which check is being used or talked about. For example, “I would like to deposit check number 1002, please.”

Checkbook Register

A small booklet that is used to keep track of your account balance when you write checks or make a deposit or a withdrawal.
